Heartbreak from Texas' Heartbeat Law

 A lot of babies were killed yesterday.

I've talked with a number of limited government/libertarian people who are pro-choice yet believe that abortion kills a human being. Their logic is simple - making an act illegal does not stop it from happening.  Prohibitionists saw their efforts fail when they outlawed drinking in the 20s. Those seeking to decriminalize marijuana today apply this same logic.


Now I believe on a moral level that it is good to criminalize acts like murder and manslaughter. Laws are sometimes about prevention and sometimes about punishment. I believe abortion is at minimum, the equivalent of manslaughter and should therefore also be criminalized and punished as such. 


But that doesn't remove the unintended consequences of Texas' new policy. It has been reported that abortion clinics in Texas were overwhelmed with women wanting an abortion before the law took effect.(1) Simply and sadly put, the supply was very limited and so the demand sky rocketed. 


The pro-life movement has long used ultrasounds to convince the mother of the life within her. Now, by criminalizing the abortion of a baby once a heartbeat is detectable, most abortions will likely take place before then. This means the pro-life advocates in Texas have lost this tool of persuasion. 


Again, I believe what Texas has done is a good and moral thing. But we must realize that in Texas the work of advocating for mothers to choose life for their babies has not ended. It has only changed, and perhaps is only more difficult.


P.S. One of the most creative solutions I have seen is Save Unborn Life. They offer mothers $3,000 to cover the financial burden of being pregnant and giving birth. After that the mother is free to keep the baby or offer it up for adoption. It's basically a bribe, and while it may not be the ideal or "most pure" solution, it is pragmatic and is a rare example of a solution that both pro-life and pro-choice people can agree on. Why is the Post Office Terrible?

We are halfway through December. This is the busiest time of year for companies like UPS, Fedex, and Amazon. And the question on everyone's mind is, “Can I get my package delivered by the 25th?” All of this is going on, just like it does every year, and yet….my local Post Office had one solitary person working the front desk. This would have been irritating on its face, but to add insult to injury, an older woman next to me heralded the Post Office’s “efficiency” and assured everyone that we would be in and out “quickly.” While I recognize that patience is a virtue and a Fruit of the Spirit, the Post Office was not efficient and after waiting 45 minutes (with a long line of people still behind me), I can also say it was not quick. How Things Become Politicized

There is a growing lament among centrists and moderates that everything has become political (1). In Luke 11:17 Jesus says, “Every Kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls.” And boy is America divided. From sports, to beans.
