Principles, Common Ground, and Unity (in that order)

Image
Barack Obama: “On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.” Donald Trump: “The Bible tells us, how good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity.” ... “When America is united, America is totally unstoppable.” Presidents of the “United” States of America, like to urge their fellow Americans to be united. In his inauguration speech Joseph Biden called for unity six times. “To overcome these challenges – to restore the soul and to secure the future of America – requires more than words. It requires that most elusive of things in a democracy: Unity. Unity.” “With unity we can do great things. Important things.” “History, faith, and reason show the way, the way of unity.” “For without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury.” “This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge, and unity is the path forward.” “And together, we shall write an American story of hope, not fear. Of unity, not divisio...

Davies, Harrigan: The War on Small Business

If you know a small business owner, you know this is both true and heartbreaking. What is even more heartbreaking is economists like these authors have been warning of this outcome since the start of the lockdowns. In response they were shouted down and called rude things like “grandma killers”. This is why economics is important. It’s not enough to have good intentions. At some point public policy needs to actually work. And if it doesn’t, we need to be humble enough to reverse course. https://insidesources.com/the-war-on-small-business/

What happens if we lose the First Amendment?

We have the first amendment because the founders didn’t want an American clone of the Church of England, which was famously established because Henry VIII wanted a divorce and the pope said “No”.(1). “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion [promoting one religion over another], or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Interestingly the phrase “separation of church and state” is not in the First amendment nor is it in the constitution. Thomas Jefferson wrote in a letter that the legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, “thus building a wall of separation between Church & State”.(2) With this context it is clear the First Amendment was intended to limit government intrusion into religion, not vice versa. Over the years, ho...

[Satire] Fetus Challenges its Mother to a Duel to the Death

Image
A fetus has petitioned to grant its motion for trial by combat against its mother and her abortionist, "On the field of battle where (he) will rend their souls from their corporeal bodies." The 20 week old fetus, which requested that it be referred to as baby, he, him, or Goliath the Destroyer, claims that his mother, Karen, has, "Destroyed him legally." He requested the court give him 18 years "lead time" in order to become a legal adult and forge a katana. Communication is via Morse Code, with the baby kicking Karen in the amniotic sac. This has led Karen to counter sue, charging Goliath the Destroyer with assault, battery, and trespassing. Incidentally in order to carry out the sentences of these charges would require Goliath to first be born. Why Deplatforming Parler is Bad

Google and Apple are removing the Parler app for not censoring posts which incite violence. As a Christian conservative/libertarian this puts me in a tough spot. I don't like that these companies are doing this, but at the same time I'm happy that the major credit card companies and PayPal have cut off payments to PornHub(1). I also think it's okay for bakers to refuse to bake cakes for any reason, religious, bigoted, or otherwise(2). So to stay true to my principles I have to agree these companies are within their rights to do this. Now I will add a big caveat that the CEO of Parler has made some compelling statements regarding double standards(3). This could become a very strong legal case pertaining to any platform that would go a long way to clarifying the role of Section 230 and the bounds of censorship by private companies. But for now, we will have to wait and see how things play out. (Update: Parler has announced a lawsuit against Amazon (3.1)) Freedom of speech, h...

A Defense of Amazon

Image
On December 18th, AOC tweeted out a Bloomberg article titled, “Amazon Has Turned a Middle-Class Warehouse Career Into a McJob.”(1) She says, “This is why 'Amazon jobs' aren't it & we should instead focus our public investments + incentives on small businesses, public infrastructure, & worker cooperatives that actually support dignified life. A job that leaves you homeless & on food stamps isn’t a job. Its a scam”(2) The Bible constantly reminds us to care for and not exploit the poor. “For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’”- Deuteronomy 15:11 “Hear this, you who trample on the needy and bring the poor of the land to an end, saying, “When will the new moon be over, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale, that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great and deal deceitfully with false balances, t...

Politifact Rebuttal

Image
Source: https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2019/sep/10/arlen-parsa/evidence-shows-most-47-men-famous-declaration-inde/ "This is one of the most famous paintings in American history: Declaration of Independence," Arlen Parsa wrote above an image of the 1818 oil by John Trumbull. "I decided to put red dots on all the men who held slaves. Next time someone puts them on a pedestal and says we can't question their judgement on guns or whatever, show them this image."(1) In addressing this work of art, we need to establish two basic facts: 1. The Declaration of Independence is a different document from the Constitution 2. These two unique and separate documents were signed by unique and different people (except in 6 cases: George Clymer, George Read, Roger Sherman, Robert Morris, Robert Morris, Benjamin Franklin). 3. The Declaration does not address slavery or gun rights. 4. The Constitution does. So Arlen Parsa is complaining about the Constitution while pointing ...
