I Lost All the Elections. Now What?
I voted for president, senator, representative, mayor, three city council members, and five school board members. At the time of this writing I am 0 for 11. By the time this presidential election is resolved it’s highly likely that I’ll be 0 for 12.
So….now what?
"First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." - 1 Time 2: 1-4
The second thing, is I plan to get more involved in my local government.
Personally I have a new resolution: to attend at least one City Council meeting per quarter, and to attend one School Board meeting per year.
While most of the focus is on D.C., it is actually local politics that plays a far greater role in our daily lives.(1) One of the great examples is when Seattle’s city council went after Amazon with a “head tax”.(2) A quick summary is the council targeted large corporations like Amazon, Boeing, and Starbucks with a hefty tax to raise millions of dollars for affordable housing projects. Well companies didn’t like being targeted and pledged to leave the city over this tax, impacting thousands of jobs and livelihoods. That’s the power of local governments.
And it's not just that they have a greater role. It's also that I can have a greater impact. To try to put things in a mathematical perspective look at these results from Tuesday’s election.
In my city I was one of 43,000 votes for mayor. (0.002%)
In my state I was one of 4 million votes for president. (0.000025%)
